For those of you that missed out last night (or don’t have cable), 10-year-old Sussex Spaniel Ch Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee, aka “Stump,” won Best in Show at the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club. Though Tails doesn’t necessarily advocate dog shows and breeding, there’s one thing we can be happy about with Stump’s win—it proves senior pets can accomplish anything!

There are plenty of senior pets waiting in shelters and rescues, ready to share their golden years with you. Though they may not be as adorable as a puppy, they know better than to wet in the house or chew up your favorite shoe.

When thinking of adopting a pet, don’t rule out the older ones. They need love too, and are winners in their own right.

Be sure to check out Tails’ upcoming March rescue & adoption issue, with more information on senior pet adoption.

Celebrities and parties go hand in hand, and it’s no different for the celebri-dogs of the 133rd Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The distinguished pooches took a break from show activities to take advantage of a special Pet Playground on the roof of the Affinia Manhattan made just for them. golden-retrieverThe playground was customized with astro-turf and featured plastic fire hydrants. The pups were offered Peanut Butter Pupcakes from Affinia’s Canine Confections Menu as well as other special amenities from the Affinia’s Jet Set Pets Program which it offers at its New York and Chicago hotels.

After some relaxation, it’s back to business for these top dogs. Tonight they compete for the coveted title of Best in Show. The live telecast will appear on the USA network starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Yes, it’s that time of year again. No, I’m not referring to spring with an obscene amount of anticipation. I’m referring, naturally, to the Westminster Kennel Club 133rd Annual Dog Show, “America’s Dog Show.” This pageant of canine splendor will take place Monday, February 9, and Tuesday, February 10, at Madison Square Garden and will feature 2,500 dogs representing some 170 breeds.

The Hound, Terrier, nonsporting, and herding group competition will be televised live Monday on USA Network from 8 to 9 p.m. EST, and continue on CNBC from 9 to 11 p.m. EST. The competition for sporting, working, toy, and best in show will be televised live Tuesday on USA Network from 8 to 11 p.m. EST.

Angel on a Leash (AngelOnALeash.org) and Take the Lead (TakeTheLead.org) will be the co-beneficiaries of this year’s show.
