TAILS is on Rosie O’Donnell’s blog!

In Just for Fun, Tails Press on March 22, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Rosie O’Donnell’s new radio show on SiriusXM has quickly become my “go-to” show when I am getting ready in the morning. I find her views on everything from politics to social media, and life in general are interesting and entertaining. In addition, having 4 kids of my own, I definitely relate to her commentary on her own life with a houseful of kids, and what challenges and adventures she goes through on a daily basis. Last week I had the opportunity to call in and chat with Rosie–and it was oddly normal! It felt as if I was just talking to an old friend about marriage and other issues (the topic at hand.)

As our conversation wrapped up, and after she rewarded me with a dozen delicious Crumbs cupcakes, I mentioned how happy I was that she had a rescued dog, and let her know that we’d love to have her and her animals on the cover. She told me she’d check us out, and true to her word, she did. She went as far as to include TAILS in the wrap up of her show, and put a link to the magazine up on her website.

We are extremely proud that she enjoyed the magazine enough to include us, and we do hope to be able to bring you more about Rosie and her pets in an upcoming issue!

Check out Rosie’s blog for yourself!

World’s Oldest Dog Dies at 21

In Animal News on September 2, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Obit World Oldest Dog

Guinness World Records has lost a great. Chanel, a white, wirehaired Daschund who was living on Long Island with her pet parents, Karl and Denice Shaughnessy, died Friday, Aug. 28. She held the current record for world’s oldest dog.

Having lived a long 21 years – which is about 147 in dog years – Chanel will no doubt be missed. While 21 is a significant year in young human’s lives, Chanel just celebrated her final birthday in May – at a doggie hotel and spa, nonetheless.

Because of her cataracts and sensitivity to cold weather, she was best remembered wearing a colorful sweater and sunglasses. Karl and Denice mentioned, though, that she still had plenty of pep in her step.

She died of natural causes in her home in Jefferson Station, N.Y., which is about 50 miles east of New York City.

Poop patrol

Get out your pooper scoopers, because International Pooper Scooper Week is fast approaching, from April 1st through the 7th. The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (aPaws), founded in February 2002, has set aside this week as a time to drive home the need for dog guardians to do away with the brown factor in a responsible way.

Dog waste is nothing to pooh-pooh. America’s nearly 71 million dogs produce more than 4.4 billions pounds of waste per year. Peew! Offenses to the senses aside, many parasites posing serious health risks, especially to children, are transmitted through dog feces. So join the movement and scoop that poop!

San Diego police K9 stabbed in line of duty

In Animal News on March 24, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Friday started like a normal day for San Diego Police Sergeant Jess Havin and his partner of five years, Earp, but the day ended in an unimaginable way. Havin, a K-9 officer, was radioed to a domestic dispute, and Earp, an 8-year-old German Shepard, was by his side.

According to SignOnSanDiego.com, Earp, for the first time in his career, was ordered to bite the perpetrator. Earp approached William Bradley who was still holding the knife he used to kill his wife, when Bradley stabbed Earp in the throat. Two officers then shot Bradley to death after turning his attention to them.

Havin picked up his bloody partner, and quickly carried him to their car. It took Havin one minute to escape from the house, and with sirens blaring and lights flashing, drove eight miles in five minutes to the VCA Main Street Animal Hospital, where veterinarians were waiting to treat Earp.

One of Earp’s carotid arteries was severed and had to be repaired, so blood could continue to flow to his brain.

Earp is one month away from retirement, and is on a 14-day mandatory leave after his attack. Before Friday Earp had only scared people and searched for guns or drugs.

Upon retirement Earp will live with Havin in Alpine, CA.

Earp is stable and is recovering at Havin’s house.
