Lawsuit filed in California against pet product companies

In Animal News on April 23, 2009 at 4:46 pm

The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has filed a lawsuit in Alameda County, CA, against 16 pet product retailers, including Petsmart and PetCo, for illegally selling products known to contain the cancer-causing chemical propoxur without a warning label. The NRDC claims that the companies have failed to comply with California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, also known as Proposition 65. Violations of Proposition 65 entail penalties of up to $2,500 per violation.

In a scientific analysis released today, April 23, 2009, the NRDC has noted findings of high levels of propoxur and tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP), also known to cause cancer, on pet fur after the wearing of an ordinary flea collar. Consequently, the NRDC is petitioning the Environmental Protection Agency for the removal of these carcinogens from all pet products.
