Military family pets subject to breed profiling

In Animal News on March 13, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Military families with a penchant for Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and other breeds deemed dangerous by the Pentagon are being ordered to surrender their beloved pooches. Announced in a memo dated January 5, 2009, just prior to the Bush administration’s exodus from office, the policy bans what the memo terms “aggressive or potentially aggressive breeds of dogs” from military housing in bases across the country. Targeted breeds include not only Pit Bulls (American and English Staffordshire Bull Terriers) and Rottweilers, but Doberman Pinschers, Chows, and wolf hybrids.

Dogs currently living on base can be grandfathered in to the policy’s proscriptions. Military families asked to relocate and new enlistees are also forbidden from bringing dogs of banned breeds with them to base.

To urge President Obama and Michelle Obama to overturn this policy, email comments@whitehouse.gov. To voice your concern to the Army directly, contact Ms. Joyce VanSlyke at joyce.vanslyke@us.army.mil.

  1. YOU KNOW I OWN A PITBULL AND A JACK RUSSEL THEY BOTH PLAY WITH EACH OTHER EVERY DAY. BUT WHEN SOME ONE COMES TO MY HOUSE THE JACK RUSSEL IS THE ONE THAT IS NOT FRIENDLY AT ALL BUT MY PIT JUST WANTS LOVE AND ATTENTION. I ALSO HAVE TAKEN HIM TO CLASSES WHEN HE WAS A PUPPY. I HAVE OWNED HIM SINCE HE WAS 6WKS OLD AND NEVER EVER HAD A AGGRESSION ISSUE WITH HIM .I WILL NOT GET RID OF HIM FOR ANY ONE THAT IS NOT RIGHT TO HIM OR ME.
