Congress to vote on primate bill today

In Uncategorized on February 23, 2009 at 5:16 pm

The U.S. Congress is set to vote on a bill that prevents primates from being pets. Today Congress will vote on the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 80). This bill will keep primates in the wild and not in households where they can be dangerous.

To take action you can visit the Humane Society Legislative Fund to find your U.S. Representative’s phone number. A simple call to your representative to voice your support can help the bill be passed.

The Humane Society of the United States reminds you to be professional and polite. A staff member will most likely answer and can pass your message along.

The HSUS offers a sample script of what to say: “Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I’m calling to urge [Representative’s name] to support H.R. 80, the Captive Primate Safety Act. This legislation must pass immediately, before another person is injured or killed by a pet primate. Thank you.”

  1. Lets make the Captive Canine Safety Act which will ban ownership of all dogs before another child is maimed and or killed. The incident with the chimp was unfortunate, but it is NOT a common occurrence. dogs kill multiple yearly in the US alone, yet no law is restricting their travel between states. It all boils down to responsible ownership. There are responsible and irresponsible people as owners of ALL animal species.

That bill is a waste of tax payer money consider the ONLY 2-3 monkey bites reported a year. If there are 15,000 pet primates in the US (according to HSUS) that means less than 1% of owners a year have an issue with their primate. There are roughly 72 MIllion dogs in the US and 3-4million bites, 800,000 needing hospitalization, which is about 4% of canine owners having problems with their pets! I am in no way in favor of banning dogs, its just some things are twisted to show only the negative side. There are responsible primate owners out there, but they don’t make teh news because the story of a happy well-adjusted primate is not newsworthy! Come on people wake up!
