Catfish or sea kittens?

In Animal News on January 19, 2009 at 6:07 pm

In an effort to create more compassion for our ocean-dwelling friends, PETA is now calling fish “sea kittens.” Children and their parents can find sea kitten bedtime stories and make their own sea kittens on their website.

“Most parents would never dream of spending a weekend torturing kittens for fun,” says PETA Campaign Coordinator Ashley Byrne, “but hooking a sea kitten through the mouth and dragging her through the water is the same as hooking a kitten through the mouth and dragging her behind your car.”

The campaign started in North Carolina, leaving fishing families and workers perplexed, with plans to extend across the country and into Alaska.

Brian Dixon, a management biologist for National Marine Fisheries Service, says that he doesn’t see how the name change will affect his business. Adding, “I think I may eat some sea kittens tonight.”
