British invasion: Second largest litter of puppies ever born

In PUPPIES! on January 9, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Button, a 3-year-old Dalmatian wonderdog living in the U.K., delivered the second largest litter of puppies on record Dec. 23 at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Sileby, Leicestershire. The 18 puppies mark the largest litter ever in the U.K., according to the British Dalmation Club. Only Tia, a Neapolitan Bull Mastiff in Thailand who gave birth to 24 puppies in 2005, has been recorded as having delivered more.

The most remarkable fact in this remarkable tale, however, may be that all 18 puppies have survived: Just consider the strain that 18 hungry mouths can put on one mama, no matter how extraordinary. Button had also given birth to 16 pups the previous year. She is (perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not) the daughter of one of the starring dogs in the Disney movie 102 Dalmatians.

  1. Whilst searching for the details of large litters, I came across your site which records the litter born to a bitch named ‘Tia’ which had 24 puppies (thouygh not all survived). You also record that this dog was in Thailand . . . sorry, it happened in Manea, Cambridgeshire in the UK.
