No matter what your feelings on the Bush administration, as Americans we can all mourn the passing of a decidedly apolitical member of the First Household: the First Cat. The 18-year-old female black American shorthair died on Sunday, January 4, in the White House. Originally named India by the Bush twins after former Texas Rangers player Ruben Sierra, nicknamed El Indio, the cat’s name was later changed to Kitty. Some have speculated that the name change took place in response to protests from Hindu nationalists, but the First Lady’s office has refuted this charge. The cat was also known by the nickname Willie.
