At PETCOs across the country, the question may soon turn from “How much is that rabbit in the window?” to “What rabbit…?” The national pet supply chain recently announced that it will phase out rabbit sales in 2009.
After cats and dogs, rabbits are the third-most surrendered animal to shelters.
“The phase-out of rabbit sales by PETCO is a great step forward to help homeless, adoptable rabbits across the country,” says Adam Goldfarb, companion animal issues specialist for The HSUS.
If you’re thinking of bringing a rabbit into your home, go to a local animal shelter or rabbit rescue instead of purchasing one from a pet store. (Hint: Check out our resource guide at TailsInc.com for shelters and rescues in your area.)
