What They Don’t Want You to Know About Designer Dogs

In Uncategorized on July 23, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I’ll admit that I find puggles (a pug and beagle cross) to be adorable, however, now I will definitely think about the ramifications of purchasing a hybrid. Designer dogs such as puggles, cockapoos, and labradoodles are extremely popular right now, especially in an urban area like Chicago. Today, the Chicago Tribune featured a story about the dark side of the hybrid dog business. Hybrid dogs are a cross between two purebred dogs, which often means they are more expensive then a single breed of purebred. It’s not unheard of for a hybrid to cost upwards of $2000! The cost, however, is the least of the concerns with designer dogs. Puppies that are bought from pet stores or internet breeders may have been sold to the store/breeder by a puppy mill. This is actually a very common practice, the Humane Society estimates that there are 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S. 10,000! The dogs that come from puppy mills are mentally and physically abused and neglected. As a result, they tend to have several health problems that a prospective buyer is not informed about. Major urban metropolises like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles are excellent places for puppy mill owners to exploit people and dogs because there is typically a large body of wealthy clientele who want designer dogs. So, even though these designer breeds are often adorable, the best way to find a dog is to adopt one from a shelter.

  1. Regarding your comment “Puppies that are bought from pet store or internet MAY have been sold to the store/breeder by a puppymill”.

No reputable breeder needs to sell their puppies via a pet store of the internet. Puppies sold through pet stores DO come from puppy mills. No exception. Puppies sold over the internet more than likely come from puppy mills. Reputable breeders only breed when then have people who they have screened ready to accept a dog. They do not need to use other outlets to sell their puppies.
