Save the Polar Bears

In Uncategorized on May 2, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Global warming is not only taking a toll on the Earth, it is also affecting many animals of the world— especially the polar bear.

As the Arctic continues to melt at a rapid rate, the polar bear may soon become extinct if no action is taken to protect them. One way to do this is to place them under the Endangered Species Act.

According to the Center for Biological Diversity, “Listing the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act guarantees federal agencies will be obligated to ensure that any action they authorize, fund, or carry out will not jeopardize the polar bears’ continued existence or adversely modify their critical habitat, and the Fish and Wildlife Service will be required to prepare a recovery plan for the polar bear, specifying measures necessary for its protection.”

Unfortunately, the Bush Administration missed their deadline almost four months ago. And because of this, a federal judge has ordered the administration to make their final decision by May 15. If they choose not to protect the polar bear, the animals could be imperiled due to global warming.

The Center for Biological Diversity is urging people to sign a petition to place polar bears back on the endangered species list. By May 15, the organization hopes to deliver 60,000 signatures to the Secretary of Interior.
