Meet Bo, the new first dog.

The Obamas have finally added a canine companion to their family. Bo, a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog, was given to Sasha and Malia Obama as a gift from Sen. Edward Kennedy and his wife. The Kennedy’s have Portuguese water dogs and thought it would be the perfect dog for Sasha and Malia.

Bo did not come from an animal shelter like the Obamas had hoped, but he is a second-chance dog who was returned from the first family that took him home. The Washington Post reports that although the dog did not come from a shelter like the Obamas had originally planned, the family will make a donation to the Washington DC Humane Society.
